Reading Time: 3 minutesI was excited to pick up Fuyuno Haruaki and Ginta’s Comiket 79 collaboration, GAINAX Girl Mix. I anticipated both Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann and Panty & Stocking with Garterbelt goodness inside. It’s there and much more creative than I imagined.
GAINAX Girl Mix is a B5-sized staple-bound book that is 24 pages when counting the covers. The outside and inside covers have art work and artist messages from Ginta and Fuyuno Haruaki. Some of the illustrations are for a mature audience and I’m sorry to say that four of the illustrations meet that criteria. This includes some amazing versions of Yoko from TTGL and Nono from Aim for the Top 2!
It’s impressive to see the “Mix” part of the title GAINAX Girl Mix is literal, with unique crossover styling. The Neon Genesis Evangelion Asuka illustration above incorporates TTGL Yoko’s skull hair-clips, bra, and flame motifs onto the NGE plugsuit, with a Lagann-style version of EVA-02 in the background. In Ginta’s illustration, Mamimi and Haruko dress up in Panty and Stocking’s angel gear, but keep their FLCL signature items—a guitar and a camera.
Fuyuno Haruaki also illustrates a couple of character cross-over works with all the girls in bikinis and swimsuits featuring girls from Nadia Secret of Blue Water, Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann, Neon Genesis Evangelion, Aim for the Top 2!, and the neglected Magical Shopping Arcade Abenobashi.
Usami Rui (ウサミ ルイ) contributes a guest illustration. Then it moves into Fuyuno Haruaki’s rough sketches for the finished illustrations in the book. There aren’t any from Ginta, though. There are also a few 4-koma comics and a bit of GAINAX LEGO®. GAINAX Girl Mix is a really fun collection! The illustrations are new for the book, which is really something that elevates my opinion on any doujinshi!
