Tonbo: Ryo Ueda Toho Art Collection II4 min read
Reading Time: 3 minutesTonbo: Ryo Ueda Toho Art Collection II does not have the physical production caliber of the first, but the Touhou art work within stands up to the original and improves upon it.
Tonbo: Ryo Ueda Toho Art Collection II is A4-sized and 80 pages. Like the original it also has a landscape display. The book is paperback this time and there are no translucent pages. It feels like an efficient version with no frills although the sticker price is the same.
The art is beautifully displayed with full page layouts and spreads. There aren’t as many illustrations as you would expect for the length. There are 34 illustrations counting the cover work. The spreads have no overlap, so some of the works seem cut off with the tight binding.
This time around, characters like Toramaru Shou and Hijiri Byakuren appear, as they graced covers for C-CLAYS Touhou albums over the past few years. While the first collection contained works from as far back as 2006, this collection covers two years, 2009 and 2010. A couple of pieces in the Other section may be older.
Tonbo: Ryo Ueda Toho Art Collection II ends with 15 pages of rough sketches and line arts along with a message from the artist. To be honest, I felt a bit blasé about this volume. It doesn’t help that this time around, I’ve also been exposed to every illustration in the book beforehand due to my far too frequent browsing of Toranoana. For the price, it’s still worth collecting.
