Foo Midori’s Book of Pictures8 min read
Reading Time: 4 minutesFoo Midori’s Book of Pictures is easily the must-have art book of the year. It’s 320 pages and each illustration has a full page or spread. There are beautifully detailed costumes, character designs, and originals from Fantasy Odyssey/SiLKROAD ONLINE, Kikan S Magazine, FELLOWS! Magazine, Alteil and many more.
Foo Midori’s Book of Pictures is A4-size and 320 pages. It’s soft cover and way too heavy for the way it’s bound together. But it’s sturdy enough that you won’t have a problem with pages falling out. The book starts out with 50 pages of art work from Fantasy Odyssey/SiLKROAD ONLINE.
Midori Foo has been a frequent contributor to FELLOWS! Magazine. One of the great things about FELLOWS! is that the illustrations are theme-based and change with each issue so you see a lot of very creative illustrations. Foo’s range is impressive, from her anime-style space girl to a Dungeons & Dragons style battle-weary knight.
There’s a 15-page color comic in the book, originally from Girl World, and it’s the only comic in the collection. The real media illustrations from Kikan S Magazines appear, but they look out-of-date next to her digital coloring skills.
Midori Foo also illustrates several light novels. One is Rinkan no Madoushi, which frequently advertises in Dengeki Bunko Magazines. There are about 15 pages from the series.
There’s another section from different online games. There are some from Ys Online, SOULALIVE ONLINE, Collection King TCG, and several pages of single illustrations for games like AIKA Online and HELLGATE. That also marks the end to background-less illustrations for the rest of the book.
Midori Foo contributes art work to so many publications that it’s hard to be familiar with all the works in the book. Finding all the card game illustrations alone would be a monumental task.
Midori Foo demonstrates yet another art style in the latter half of the book, some with flat coloring and portraits. It just really shows what a versatile artist she is.
This book includes nearly all of her illustrations from collections like Moeru Japanese Sword Girls and Girls With Cameras/A Pictorial Book. Even with the number of photos in this review, there’s still so much more to see in the actual book. Foo Midori’s Book of Pictures is definitely worth the money, and I wouldn’t hesitate recommending it for any collector!
