After reviewing Benigyokuzui Vol. 27, I was inspired to go back and look through some of CARNELIAN’s older doujins, which lead me to today’s review for Benigyokuzui Vol. 15. It’s one of the few older volumes that is full color with both fan arts and original works.

Benigyokuzui Vol. 15 B5-sized and 36 pages including the covers. The pages are smooth and untextured, with very high quality AM screening. The cover art features a damaged Rei Ayanami from Neon Genesis Evangelion, with chopped wings and draped bandages. The same illustration is inside, with a close-up picture on the adjacent page with a comment. This format is used through out the whole book, so it feels like you’re getting one “new” illustration on every other page.

The highlight for Benigyokuzui Vol. 15 for me was the fan art. CARNELIAN took on Code Geass, drawing Lelouch with Suzaku, and Euphemia with C.C. in summertime yukatas. Her version of Yoko Littner from Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann is also nicely done, though impossibly endowed… Several of the illustrations in Benigyokuzui Vol. 15 still have hatch shading, as if CARNELIAN just scanned in her line art and colored over it.

The last five illustrations are all original works, some of which have appeared in CARNELIAN’s other doujins. Even though Benigyokuzui Vol. 15 is older, I think the art really stands the test of time and looks great even by today’s standards.
