The Art of PSG Vol. 1 Collection of Initial Design features early designs for Panty & Stocking with Garterbelt. While there are some color illustrations, most of the book is black and white. It gives real insight into the creative process behind the show’s unique character designs.

The art book was released at Comiket 79 and it’s A4-sized book with a landscape orientation. It’s 150 pages with about 24 pages in color. The contents are organized by artist. It includes Atsushi Nishigori, Hiroyuki Imaishi, Yoh Yoshinari, and Shigeto Koyama, who have grouped together under the name GEEK FLEET. Atsushi Nishigori is the character designer and has the largest section in the book.

The illustrations above are by Atsushi Nishigori. The color pages have a more finished design but the pencil sketches have a drastically different look. Short-haired Panty appears on a few pages. The concept arts for Stocking are most like the finished versions. The main difference is a version without bangs. Scanty and Kneesocks look more cute than tough!

Hiroyuki Imaishi‘s chapter runs from pages 71 to 100. Imaishi’s style is easy to recognize even when you’re not looking for it. His illustrations are rougher than Nishigori’s, but his storyboards are clean.

Yoh Yoshinari is the artist for the third chapter. It starts out with seven pages of color illustrations. There are concept arts for Garterbelt and the pink Hummer, See-Through, along with conceptual story boards.Yoshinari’s rough designs are nothing like the end result!

Shigeto Koyama’s section is the fourth and final chapter. The main feature is the ending sequence designs and color versions of Chuck and Fastener. I really enjoyed The Art of PSG Vol. 1, it’s a great glimpse into the creative process for the anime.
